“Serbia to feel impact of financial crisis”

Head of the EC Delegation to Serbia Josep Lloveras says that Serbia will feel some of the impact of the global financial crisis. Lloveras added that it is not directly threatened. “Serbia to feel impact of financial crisis” "We hope that the consequences will be limited, but there will be some,” Lloveras wrote in an article for Belgrade daily Blic. He said that the world crisis was one of the topics of the recent economic dialogue between Serbia and the EU, where it was concluded that Serbia’s macro-economic stability needed to be maintained in order to improve growth and enhance consumers’ buying power. "As Serbia gets closer to the EU, these talks need to be held more often, and not only with the decision makers, but with other partners as well - the business community, universities, NGOs…,” the European Commission official (EC) said. He added that the EC had confirmed that it was willing to participate in the dialogue, because, among other things, it had attended the meeting of Serbian industrialists and EU officials. "We believe that by further strengthening of economic ties, we will be able to help Serbia to accelerate its European integration process,” Lloveras said. He said that the European Integration process should not only be a “process of diplomatic exercises,” but change, in which all of society needed to be involved. Lloveras believes that the implementation of the Interim Trade Agreement, scheduled by the Serbian government to begin on January 1, 2009, will strengthen relations between Belgrade and Brussels.
