President Boris Tadic says that Serbia wants “the historic conflict in Kosovo to be resolved with a compromise and in peace.” He said that the international presence in Serbia’s southern province “must not jeopardize the vital interests of Serbs and Albanians living in Kosovo.” Tadic calls for “peaceful, compromise solution” Tadic said that it was important that the mission did not jeopardize Serbia’s integrity or the vital interests of both the Serbs and ethnic Albanian populations living in Kosovo. “We don’t wish any harm to the Albanian population in Kosovo because we think of the Kosovo Albanians as our citizens too, and we want to solve this historic conflict in a peaceful way and with a compromise solution” that would satisfy both sides, the president said. He said that Serbia did not have “any issues with EULEX,” providing that the mission met certain conditions. The first condition was that the mission should work under a UN mandate, the second that it must not apply the Ahtisaari Plan that viewed Kosovo as an independent state, and the third that the mission should be neutral regarding the province’s status. If all those conditions were met, Tadic said, the name of the international mission in Kosovo was not important. What was important was that the mission pursued its policy respecting those conditions, he said. The president said that Serbia would not recognize Kosovo’s independence and that it would defend its interests in a legal way. “Meanwhile, we will secure our EU membership. No one from Europe is conditioning Serbia with recognition of Kosovo independence, and even if someone tried to, they couldn’t,” Tadic underlined. Boris Tadic (FoNet, archive)
