Tomislav Nikolic will be the Serb Progressive Party's (SNS) only candidate for party leader, said Aleksandar Vucic. The vice-president of the party’s Initiative Board told a press conference that 3,000 delegates of the SNS board supported Nikolic’s candidacy. Nikolic to be SNS sole leadership candidate He explained that Nikolic would nominate a deputy once he was elected party leader, adding that all the delegates would vote on this, but that no main board would be elected at tomorrow’s founding assembly session. Vucic said that this was because the SNS wanted people who were respected locally to be at the head of all municipal and district boards. The role of the main board in the next six months, he said, would be to serve as a temporary presidency, which would be formed tomorrow and have 20 members. “The goals of the party will be very serious and with victory in mind. We are not satisfied with just participating in the political scene. Our specific goal is to defeat the regime of Tadic and Dacic,” Vucic said, adding that by tomorrow, the party would have 75,000 members. He added that the first example of the party’s power would be seen at the local elections in four municipalities (Prijepolje, Knjazevac, Ruma and Vrnjacka Banja) on November 9. Vucic said that the government was responsible for the falling living standards, the increase in gas prices and telephone services, adding that it had done nothing to improve the lives of the people. The former Radical secretary-general predicted that the increasingly depressing political and economic situation in the country would lead to early parliamentary elections being called between April and October 2009. He said that the founding assembly of the party would be attended by officials from more than 20 embassies, including the U.S., Russia, EU member-states and others. Tomislav Nikolic (FoNet, archive)
