President Boris Tadic says that the problems that currently exist with Montenegro and Macedonia cannot be allowed to last indefinitely. He said that Serbia wanted to have the best possible relations with her neighbors. Tadic told daily Vecernje Novosti that being anti-Montenegrin or anti-Serb was not only pointless in a historical context, but was also dangerous. “Dispute with neighbors mustn’t last indefinitely” “Yes, after the proclamation of Kosovo independence and the recognition of such an illegal creation by the Montenegrin government, the result is that Serbian and Montenegrin children cannot travel to Montenegro or Serbia for a field trip, which is the height of stupidity. That must stop as soon as possible,” Tadic said. The president said that Serbia had implemented diplomatic measures against Montenegro and Macedonia because of their decisions to recognize Kosovo independence, and that all other sanctions that other politicians in Serbia were mentioning were “red lines that should not be crossed.” “When, on both sides, we have anti-Montenegrin and anti-Serb sentiment as a manifestation of our relations and the atmosphere in public, then I have to ring the alarm bell and say ‘Stop!’ When Serbian MPs say that Montenegrin government officials are not safe in Serbia, then I have to say ‘Stop!’ It is a crime to threaten others,” he said. Speaking of the diplomatic measures that Serbia had taken, Tadic said that declaring the Montenegrin and Macedonian ambassadors personae non gratae in Serbia was, according to the diplomatic dictionary, a lesser act than severing diplomatic ties with a country. “It leaves us in an active position to normalize relations in the near future. Serbia cannot have a strategic interest in damaging relations with neighboring countries, but it cannot fail to react when a neighboring country compromises its integrity. This is why Serbia’s reaction was the right measure to take,” the president underlined. Tadic said that it gave him absolutely no pleasure to see the scenes of violence in Podgorica after the protest against Montenegro’s decision to recognize Kosovo. He said that he was in constant contact with the Montenegrin president, “almost weekly contact”, and that it was natural for relations between Serbia and Montenegro to be much better.
