The U.S. has expressed its support for Montenegro and Macedonia’s recognition of Kosovo. American officials expect more and more countries to recognize Kosovo’s unilateral independence declaration in the coming months. Reaction to new Kosovo recognitions “The increase in the number of countries that have recognized Kosovo confirms its progress in implementing a stable, multi-ethnic and democratic society, ready to build normal political and trade relations with its neighbors and the international community in general,” U.S. State Department Spokesman Sean McCormack said. Head of the EC Delegation to Montenegro, Ambassador Leopold Maurer, said that he was happy with Montenegro’s decision to recognize Kosovo. He said that the decision had been difficult, but that the “reality must be recognized.” “The situation is not easy, because not even all the countries of the European Union have recognized Kosovo, but we have to have a clear situation for the stability of the region,” Maurer said. Russian Ambassador to Belgrade Aleksandr Konuzin said that Russia would continue to support Serbia’s efforts to preserve Kosovo. “Citizens of Serbia, let the results of the political victory increase your belief in the justness of what you are defending and encourage new efforts. There is a lot of work ahead,” Konuzin said. The UN General Assembly adopted Serbia’s proposal to ask the opinion of the International Court of Justice on the legality of Kosovo’s independence declaration. Konuzin told Radio Television Serbia that “those supporting the break-up of Serbia” would continue their efforts and that pressure on Belgrade would continue to intensify. “I would like to repeat the words of the great Russian writer Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, who said ‘Serbs, do not give up your country.’ Be sure that Russia will remain beside Serbia in the future,” Konuzin said.
