Serbia has a lot of work to do to fight corruption as its institutions are weak and prone to political influence, says the Anti-Corruption Council president. Verica Barac told a Citizen’s Forum in Uzice that the government’s actions were inadmissible, adding that the executive authorities had allowed corruption to penetrate every level of society, and only now were launching a campaign against it. “Corruption rife at all levels” Barac said that campaigns could not tackle corruption, and that that was the job of state bodies, adding that it was unclear why tackling corruption needed political encouragement, which was also a form of pressure. She said that it was unacceptable for political parties to announce the actions of state bodies in advance, as the Democratic Party had done in the case of the crackdown on corruption. Barac said that the situation in Zrenjanin and the issue of corruption land was much less serious than the situations in the Jugoremedija and Sinvoz companies. Corruption with construction land was much more serious in Belgrade, she said, citing the Belgrade Port and the University Campus as examples, which, she pointed out, had “strangely enough not been taken up by the prosecution.”
