The District and County Courts in northern Kosovska Mitrovica will reopen after being closed for the last seven and a half months. UNMIK spokesman Alexander Ivanko said that initially the courts would be staffed by three international judges and prosecutors, together with 20 UN personnel who would handle only the most urgent cases. K. Mitrovica courts reopen under high security The courts were closed after the events of March 17 when an UNMIK police raid on the court to expel striking Serb justice workers sparked mass rioting throughout the northern part of the town, in which one Ukrainian police officer died and scores of demonstrators and police were injured. Ivanko said that the courts would work exclusively on the basis of UNMIK criminal and procedural laws. An UNMIK regional spokesman told B92 that the courts would not be working directly with parties today or Monday, and that this would start on Tuesday. Judge Nikola Kabasic, however, said that no agreement had yet been reached as to which laws the court in Kosovska Mitrovica would be working to. He added that the EULEX mission was unacceptable for the Kosovo Serbs, and that the opening of the court in the town would have political implications when it came to striking an agreement with UN representatives. As the court prepares to open, the premises are currently surrounded by around 100 international police, together with local police and KFOR representatives.
