The PM says that the best thing for Serbia would be if Ratko Mladic and Goran Hadzic surrendered voluntarily. Mirko Cvetkovic told Belgrade daily Vecernje Novosti that it would be in Serbia’s best interest if a line was drawn under the issue of Hague cooperation. PM: Best solution—Mladic surrender "As a small country in the midst of a whirlpool of events, we have no other way to defend ourselves than by respecting international law. Cooperation with the Hague is directly linked to the defense of Kosovo. If we say that we defend our southern province by respecting international law, we need to respect our international obligations and cooperate with the Hague. That way we show that we respect national law too,” he said. He added that Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Serge Brammertz had given a positive appraisal of Serbia’s cooperation with the Hague, but that the Interim Agreement could not be unblocked because of Holland’s position, which was motivated by the country’s internal political issues over events in Srebrenica and the fact that the Dutch viewed Serbia’s cooperation with the Tribunal from a different angle. Cvetkovic said that he was convinced that the Interim Trade Agreement would be unblocked in the near future, adding that the government was considering implementing the agreement unilaterally. "The point of unilateral implementation is to open up our trade towards the EU as if the agreement had been unblocked. Since we already have the opportunity to enter their markets, it means that even if the agreement had been unblocked, Serbia would have been the only active party,” the prime minister explained. He said that unblocking the agreement was necessary if Serbia wanted to officially apply for EU membership. Mirko Cvetkovic (FoNet, archive)
