Veteran Democrat (DS) official Dragoljub Micunovic today commented on the turmoil faced by the Radicals (SRS). Micunovic told the daily Vecernje Novosti in an interview that the dispute party in-fighting does not surprise him, but that he is "stunned" by the departure of Tomislav Nikolic. DS official thought "Seselj would resign" The DS Political Council head added that the dual leadership of the Serb Radicals – with Vojislav Seselj and Tomislav Nikolic – was doomed to failure. "I expected Seselj to resign, since he’s been out of the party’s life for five years. I expected him to be elected the honorary SRS president, while Nikolic would formally take over the party’s leadership. But, what’s happened is something completely opposite. I am surprised,” Micunovic said. He added that he was also taken aback by the fact that the SRS would not vote for their own amendment to the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA), which had earlier been adopted by the government. "They have defended and justified it, so how is it possible that they have changed their minds in the course of one evening? We will follow further developments in the SRS, but will not interfere in any way,” Micunovic said. He continued that the Parliamentary Foreign Policy Board would not take a stand on the issue of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, "because Serbia’s own position would be damaged in the process". Micunovic said, commenting on the draft of the new Vojvodina statute that he was "in favor of further development of the autonomy, but against separation”. “As president of the [DS] Political Council I would have to see the draft first. Then, the council should decide whether to accept it or not,” he said, adding that “right now, I know absolutely nothing on that issue". "Certainly, autonomy of the local governments needs to be supported, but decentralization of authority does not mean decentralization of the country or some redistribution of the territory. Autonomy means respect of human rights, closer ties between people and the authorities. Territorial redistribution serves to satisfy someone’s ambitions, and is not a good solution,” Micunovic concluded. Dragoljub Micunovic (FoNet)
