Russia can help Serbia much more than membership in NATO, Russian NATO ambassador Dmitry Rogozin says. Rogozin told the Belgrade daily Press on Sunday that he does not believe Serbia will become a NATO member, especially considering the alliance bombed it in 1999. "Russia can solve Serbia's economic issues" "I am sure that most Serbs don't want that. Serbian politicians think the membership is going to resolve economic issues, but there are other ways to do that. Russia can help. After all, there are wealthy countries which are either neutral or not in NATO, such as Switzerland, Austria, Sweden," the Russian diplomat said. Rogozin criticized the stand of the U.S. and the largest EU countries regarding Kosovo: "The issue of Kosovo remains a question of morality for Russia, and Serbia will always have us as a friend. Unlike some EU countries, we are not demanding from Serbia territory in order to retain 'good relations.'" According to him, Russia was forced to defend civilians and their peacekeeping troops from Georgia in South Ossetia. "Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, the vile war criminal, decided to conduct ethnic cleansing and murder thousands of people. For that, he's earned himself a slap," Rogozin stated. He added that he cannot understand Russia being criticized, when it is known what sort of crimes were committed against the civilians in South Ossetia by Georgian soldiers, and that Russia mobilized its army only in self-defense. "I cannot apprehend that NATO, which had cruelly attacked Serbia, a European country, is ripping into us. Those 'great advocates of democracy' bombed the city of Belgrade, bridges, killing civilians, many children among them, in order to defeat Slobodan Milosevic's regime," Rogozin stressed.
