Slovenia has protested to Serbia over changes to the law on company property, calling for the law to be blocked. On Tuesday afternoon, Slovenian Foreign Ministry State Secretary Matjaz Sinkovec held talks with Serbia’s temporary representative in Slovenia Aleksandar Stankovic and submitted to him a protest note over the matter. Diplomatic row brewing between Serbia, Slovenia In the note, the ministry expresses its opposition to the Provision on Changes and Annexes to the Statute on the Protection of Property of Parts of Companies whose Head Offices are Based on the Territory of the Former Republics of the SFRJ. The note calls on the Serbian government to freeze implementation of the aforesaid statute published in the Official Serbian Gazette on June 20. During their meeting, Sinkovec pointed out to Stankovic that the ministry had come to the conclusion that the provisions of the said statute ran counter to the provisions of Annex G of the Agreement on Succession Issues, repeating Slovenia’s proposal for the Serbian side to call an emergency session of the Permanent Joint Committee of the High Representatives of State Successors. At the same time, Slovenia expects a rapid response to the protest note from Serbia. Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa also discussed the contentious statute with Serbian counterpart Mirko Cvetkovic, informing him that such a statute and its application would cause Serbia big problems, including in terms of future European integration. Cvetkovic responded that he was not personally familiar with the details of the said statute, and promised to look into the matter and inform the Slovenian side in due course. The issue also cropped up during discussions between the countries' foreign ministers, Vuk Jeremic and Dimitrij Rupel. Rupel objected to the statute “that seriously threatens Slovenian companies in Serbia.” He explained to Jeremic that it was a question of ownership that needed to be resolved in line with Annex G of the Agreement on Succession Issues. At the same time, he asked the Serbian government to immediately freeze application of the statute, and call a session of the Permanent Joint Committee to discuss the issue. Rupel added that Ljubljana had already sent a second protest note over this matter.
