The U.S. says Radovan Karadzic’s arrest attests to the new govt’s will to work with the Hague and move to a Euro-Atlantic future. “We congratulate the Serbian authorities on the arrest of Radovan Karadzic, who was on the run for over 10 years,” said a State Department spokesman at a regular press conference today. U.S., Russia react to arrest Asked whether the U.S. had helped the Serbian government in arresting the war crimes suspect, the spokesman replied that he had no such information. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said today that by arresting Karadzic “Serbia's authorities fulfilled their obligations” to the Hague, and pointed out that the trial should not be politicized. “The main thing is that the trial should proceed objectively, and those elements of politicization that have been evident in the Tribunal's previous activities should not be shown,” the Russian foreign minister warned, adding that the Tribunal would in any case complete its work by the deadline set by the UN Security Council of 2010. “Hopefully, the investigation and proceedings in the Karadzic case will be impartial,“ Lavrov said on Tuesday in a statement issued following the arrest. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Andrei Nesterenko stressed that the Hague Tribunal had demonstrated a biased approach on more than one occasion.
