Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic says that he expects Serbia to continue to cooperate with Russia on the international scene. In an interview with daily Rossiiskaya Gazeta prior to his visit to Russia, Jeremic said that he expected the two countries to work together on the Kosovo issue, and on further negotiations over the energy agreement between Serbia and Russia. Jeremic: Russia is closest ally When asked whether the priorities in Serbia’s foreign policy would be the U.S. and the EU, and only then Russia, the minister replied: "No. The absolute priority of the new government will be to preserve Serbia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and in that context Russia is definitely Serbia’s closest ally. The other foreign policy priority is the country’s European integration, and I can happily say that on that issue, we have Moscow’s full support,” he said. Jeremic said that the EU was going through complicated institutional changes that would be overcome in the next few years. "I hope that the process of EU enlargement will not leave the Western Balkans countries by the wayside. I don’t believe that constitutional and institutional changes in the EU will stand in the way of Serbia’s accession,” stressed the minister. He added that the oil and gas agreement on cooperation with Russia would definitely be ratified. "There is a large majority in parliament that supports ratification of the document as it is. Nothing can stand in its way, and it will remain the epicenter of our joint interests,” Jeremic underlined. Vuk Jeremic (Beta, archive)
