Members of parliament and government want to adopt 32 laws by the end of September as a condition for EU membership. “51 laws altogether were due to have been adopted thus far, but so far that figure stands at only two. Receiving EU candidate status depends on the adoption of the remaining 49,” Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic told journalists outside parliament after a meeting with Speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic. According to Djukic-Dejanovic, the government will also soon return to parliamentary procedure a further 13 laws, including the laws on state borders, foreigners, personal ID card security, the environment, mining and energy, as well as a set of commercial and financial laws. Djelic added that there was an ambitious aim to hold one more emergency session of parliament by the end of July, where these 13 laws would be adopted. The minister also announced a group of 19 laws that parliament would debate in September, referring to corruption, money laundering, confiscation of property of those suspected of criminal association, and justice system reform. “That 13 plus 19 program should be complete by September, and that will be the best way to show how serious we are about receiving EU candidate status,” he explained.
