Serbian Consul-General in New York Slobodan Nenadovic denies helping runaway Serbian student Miladin Kovacevic illegally obtain a new passport. “I can hardly wait for the disciplinary hearing at the Foreign Ministry where I’ll prove my innocence in issuing a dual passport to the student from Kula,” Nenadovic told Beta. Plot thickens in case of fugitive Serb He added that he had offered his resignation immediately after the event, but that the Foreign Ministry had turned it down. Nenadovic claims that he is “collateral damage” in the entire process, because he was “in the wrong place at a wrong time.” He said that his assistant Igor Milosevic had issued the travel documents in question to Kovacevic while he had been away at the doctor’s, and that he only found out about the whole thing when it came out in the press. “The only thing I can say at this moment in time is that it is not the first time Milosevic has abused his position to conduct illegal activities, which I discovered from documents only after the matter had gone public, and 10 days after Kovacevic had left the U.S.”, the consul general explained. He pointed out that during his posting in the U.S., Milosevic had been “promoted two degrees in the space of a year, which is unprecedented in Serbian diplomacy.” Nenadovic could neither confirm nor deny rumors that Kovacevic had left the U.S. with a Croatian passport. The general consul, 45, was one of the founders of the Serbian Renewal Movement (SPO). He was recalled on July 2 during a Serbian government conference call. Nenadovic’s recall was linked to the case of Kovacevic, who assaulted fellow student Bryan Steinhauer and fled the U.S. on illegally issued travel documents, having been released on bail of USD 100,000. The New York court confiscated Kovacevic’s passport to prevent him leaving the country. However, deputy consul Igor Milosevic issued a temporary passport, thus enabling him to come back to Serbia.
