U.S. Assistant Sec. of State Daniel Fried says Serbia has expressed a desire for a European future, and the U.S. will cooperate with the new leadership. "After many tough years, Serbia deserves peace at home and in its neighborhood, and we intend to cooperate with Serbia on that. We are also ready to cooperate in a responsible manner with the new coalition in Serbia that includes the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS),” Fried told daily Vecernje Novosti. U.S.: Serbia deserves peace At a briefing for domestic and foreign journalists at the U.S. State Department in Washington dedicated to the Kosovo crisis, he said that the situation in the province was “a relatively peaceful and successful beginning to the process launched by the declaration of independence.“ However, Fried said that those were only the new state’s first steps, and that it still had to “face serious challenges,” alluding to the situation in the north of Kosovo. The State Department official said that the areas of the Ahtisaari plan focusing on decentralization and the protection of the Serb minority in the province , were “crucial for the future of Kosovo as a state for all people living there.” He also claimed that Russia’s attempts to block the work of the UN Security Council could not prevent Kosovo’s independence. "Kosovo is already independent, with or without a UN resolution confirming that. I am sorry that Russia has decided to make the process more difficult. In so doing, it jeopardizes not only the stability of the region, but Serbia’s European future. We expect Russia not to try and prevent President [Boris] Tadic and new Prime Minister [Mirko] Cvetkovic from dedicating themselves to Serbia’s European future,” Fried underlined.
