The U.S. yesterday condemned the establishment of the Serb assembly in Kosovo, emphasizing that Washington sees the province as an independent state. "The United States view is that Kosovo is an independent state and that its assembly and democratic institutions should be managed by its inhabitants, without any interference by Serbia or any other foreign power," State Department spokesman Tom Casey told reporters in Washington. U.S. condemns Kosovo Serb assembly The Assembly of Serb Municipalities of Kosovo-Metohija was set up last Saturday in the northern part of Kosovska Mitrovica, and its founding declaration says that the Kosovo Serbs reject the illegal unilateral declaration of independence of Kosovo. Contrary to Washington's position on the issue, Moscow this week said the move was a logical reaction to the Kosovo Albanians proclamation of secession.
