SPS leader Ivica Dacic says that his party will apply for membership of the Socialist International (SI) today. Dacic, who is attending the 23rd congress of the Socialist International in Athens, said that the SI would be deciding on the SPS’s application in the coming period. SPS to apply for SI membership He said that the SPS delegation and Democratic Party (DS) leader Boris Tadic had had several bilateral meetings in Athens, one of which had been with SI President George Papandreou. Dacic said that at the meeting with Papandreou, it had been stated that Serbia would receive a socially responsible government that would pursue policies of social justice that would “benefit policies of peace and stability in the region.” He said that the SPS delegation had also held bilateral talks with Bulgarian socialists and Just Russia leader Sergei Mironov, and that these officials and many others had assured him that “there is significant support for accepting the SPS into the Socialist International.” Bosnian SDP party leader Zlatko Lagumdzija left the congress in Athena in protest at the presence of the SPS and DS, of which he informed SI chiefs, according to the SDP’s press service.
