Rehn has expressed “his hope that the new Serbian government will accelerate Hague cooperation, and thus meet the necessary conditions for EU accession.” The European commissioner had met today with Hague Chief Prosecutor Serge Brammertz in Brussels, said Rehn’s spokeswoman Kristina Nagy. Rehn: Accelerate Hague cooperation She added that Rehn and Brammertz had reviewed Western Balkan countries’ cooperation with the Hague Tribunal, “including Serbia’s cooperation in the wake of the arrest of Stojan Zupljanin.” Nagy said that Rehn and Brammertz had also “exchanged opinions” about Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina’s cooperation with the Tribunal. Brammertz acquainted Rehn in more depth with his recent report to the UN Security Council about Western Balkan countries’ cooperation with the Tribunal. European Commission sources also told journalists that Rehn had spoken to Brammertz about the political situation in Serbia, and that they had not ruled out the possibility of the two men meeting again before the next EU Council of Ministers on July 22 and 23. The European commissioner and the prosecutor did not want to give any statements to journalists or hold a press conference due to the “sensitive timing”, especially with the formation of a pro-EU government in Serbia in its final phase, Beta was told by European diplomatic sources. Earlier this week, Rehn said in Brussels that the news about the formation of a pro-EU government in Serbia and the fact that Zupljanin had been extradited to the Hague, represented a “realistic chance” for further impetus on Serbia’s European path.
