The first phase of establishing the Kosovo Security Forces should be complete by the end of 2009, says NATO spokesman James Appathurai. Those security forces will not be of a military character, and will have 2,500 members and 800 reservists, RIA Novosti reports. NATO plans for Kosovo security forces According to Appathurai, following the end of the first phase in 2009, several years will pass before those forces are fully operational. The main tasks of the Kosovo Security Forces—who, NATO say, will be lightly armed—will be responding to crisis situations, bomb disposal, and protection of civilians. The NATO spokesman said it had been decided that the new forces would be multi-ethnic, and would include members of all Kosovo’s ethnic minorities. On June 12, NATO confirmed that it was ready to support the formation of the Kosovo Security Forces, and monitor the disbandment of the Kosovo Protection Corps.
