European Parliament Speaker (EP) Hans-Gert Poettering says that the EU wants “Serbia to take a clear pro-EU course and ratify the SAA as soon as possible." After meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic, Poettering said that he “welcomes the prospect of forming a pro-EU government” in Serbia. EP “supports Serbia’s pro-EU orientation” Djelic said that a pro-EU government would propose ratification of the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) to parliament. He added that he had presented the European Parliament (EP) speaker a national plan for Serbia’s integration and EU membership, adding that it was “an ambitious, but convincing program.” "As EP speaker, I wish Serbia luck in its path towards European integration, and my best wishes especially go to President [Boris] Tadic and Deputy Prime Minister Djelic,” Poettering said. He added that there were differences in Serbia and the EP’s positions when it came to Kosovo, but regardless of that, the EP wanted to support Serbia’s pro-EU orientation. Djelic said that Poettering had “played a key role when the SAA was signed in late April,” for which he thanked him and his colleagues. The deputy prime minister stressed that “Serbia will never accept Kosovo’s independence.” "We expect the EP to accept Serbia’s position, and to act accordingly. We are aware of the fact that there is a difference of opinions over the issue in the EP,” Djelic said.
