EU is now closer than ever to Serbia and the political damage of the SAA annulment would be overwhelming, writes Jelko Kacin. The European Parliament member and this institution's rapporteur for Serbia said in an opinion piece published today in Ljubljana's daily Delo that "it is not pleasant, but it is healing and necessary to warn that the time has come for the Serbian leaders, and Serbia, to finally ask themselves whether there might be something wrong with them". Kacin: EU closer than ever to Serbia This, Kacin believes, is because "they have managed to engage in conflict with all former Yugoslav republics, with all the minorities at home, with NATO and the EU". The Slovenian politician adds that Kosovo is a big issue, "especially after independence declaration, but not the central one", and that in Kosovo’s case, “we persisted for a long time with the standards before status." That type of policy was not fertile, there was no progress, since holding the majority responsible, without it taking control, was not possible, he continued. "There can be no progress unless we the majority a chance, we give them an opportunity and obligation to prove themselves, alter the situation, and start applying different standards”, Kacin wrote. He also believes that the annulment of the SAA "is no longer possible", and that such a move would be "politically devastating for Serbia". "The EU is ever closer and more reachable for the Serbs. Everything will depend on principle, elasticity, and political ability of the decision making politicians, who will soon have to declare themselves on the European future." "It can be shaped only by different type of coalition and a government elected by the new parliament. Many things are possible, but there is less space for backward anti-European and radical nationalist parties”, Kacin opined. He added that the full cooperation with the Hague was essential for the SAA to be ratified in all EU states. The key issue in Serbia now concerns President Boris Tadic, DS, Kacin continued, and added that he should "turn the enticing results of the election into a political reality”. The EP rapporteur, whose sacking was requested last week by Deputy Premier Bozidar Djelic, DS, also wrote that the Serbian voters "proved themselves to be much more mature than certain politicians".
