Democratic Party (DS) leader Boris Tadic has called on the party’s main board to support a coalition with the SPS at all levels. “A political compromise and an agreement over a common future is required. I’m convinced that the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) is prepared for permanent reforms and finding a way out into the future,” Tadic told the DS main board at the Sava Center, and called on them not to seek support at the door of Vojislav Kostunica or Vojislav Seselj. Tadic calls for coalition with SPS at all levels The president said a government had to be formed with the SPS because otherwise Serbia would be faced with hardships and problems. “We’ve been given the responsibility to find a solution and the only way out is to establish a government with the SPS that would include Vojvodina Hungarian representatives, and later, that group could then open dialogue with other parties. That’s the only way out of this stalemate,” he stressed. Tadic recommended forming a coalition with the Socialists at local level too. “Join hands with those you fought against during the Nineties and find a common solution for a better future,” the DS leader urged. He said that the “For a European Serbia” coalition would “continue talks that we haven’t started with representatives of all parties that won seats in parliament.” The president said that the DS and the SPS were faced with the fact that the leaders of the parties were “not among them” and that both had “their pain”, but that they had to show willingness in future and find a better option for the citizens of Serbia. As Tadic put it, “a lot of harsh words have been spoken in the past, but the DS bears no grudges and is ready to bury the hatchet, not only with those who we fought in the Nineties, but also with those we fought a month ago, for the sake of new solutions, opportunities and potentials.” “What good is electoral victory to us if we don’t form a government,” asked the DS leader, adding that the “For a European Serbia” list had “pulled off a political victory at the elections, and that was the best result in its history.” In his opinion, the SPS was not forsaking its identity, but nor was the DS, and now both parties were in a position to find a common identity. Tadic stressed that he would continue to battle for a European future and preservation of territorial integrity and sovereignty. “Serbia is in urgent need of a government that will, in the next four years, lead it to the EU, and which will continue the battle for territorial integrity, but also a government that will tackle corruption, crime and conduct a socially responsible policy,” the DS leader explained.
