The European Parliament (EP) is concerned over the stalemate in the talks on the transfer of powers from UNMIK to EULEX, it was announced today. The parliament has demanded from the European Union countries "to secure the recognition of the EU mission in the United Nations". EP wants UN blessing for EULEX Rapporteur Jacek Saryusz-Wolski said in a report, adopted this week, that the EP "believes EULEX should protect the interests of national minorities as stated in the Ahrisaari plan". The EP expressed concern over the stalemate in the talks and called on the EU members to undertake joint action in the UN with the aim of securing the recognition of the EU mission in keeping with the international civilian presence in Kosovo under UN Security Council Resolution 1244, the report said, according to Tanjug news agency. The document recalled the Feb. 18 decision by the EU Council of Ministers which "took note" of the Kosovo Albanians' decision to declare secession from Serbia. The EP also urged "strengthening of the dialogue with Serbia and concrete steps which should reaffirm the country's European prospects". The report pointed out that the EU should "develop adequate processes to avoid the isolation of Serbia".
