Acting Belgrade Mayor Zoran Alimpic, DS, has set July 14 as the date for the first session of the new city assembly, it was announced today. The decision came one day after a new coalition to rule the capital was forged by the Radicals (SRS), the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS), and the Socialists (SPS). Belgrade assembly session in mid-July Alimpic told reporters in Belgrade as he made the announcement that "everything is done within legal deadlines", and that the decision was not an attempt at stalling. The Democratic Party (DS) official explained that "negotiations to form a new government are expected, where the rule in Belgrade will be discussed, therefore it makes sense to wait with the [first] session". Alimpic also said he learned from the media and in a telephone conversation with DSS' Andreja Mladenovic that the SRS, DSS-NS and SPS-PUPS-JS have signed a coalition agreement to share power in Belgrade on the local level. Meanwhile, the parties that have reached the Belgrade deal, say the date set for the city assembly to convene is tantamount to obstruction. SRS Deputy President Tomislav Nikolic told journalists in a news conference that the move spoke of "the nonsense toward which the Democratic Party is leading Serbia". According to him, Alimpic, on behalf of the DS, used "bureaucratic measures to stop the formation of the city assembly because he does not like its majority". "Maybe they need this to cover up the traces of robbery or to steal some more from the city budget," Nikolic blasted the Democrats, who have held Belgrade for over ten years. "Only crime can be a reason for the city assembly session to be scheduled for July 14," the deputy SRS leader added. Their newly established coalition partners the Socialists were also unhappy with the announcement today. City board chairman Aleksandar Antic told Beta news agency that the move was a cheap attempt to postpone the realization of the election will of the citizens, and to introduce "a Democratic Party dictatorship in Belgrade". Antic slammed Alimpic's decision as irresponsible behavior, and added that there was no legal basis for the scheduling the first assembly meeting for mid-July.
