He said that the situation in Strpce was very sensitive and that communication with KFOR and UMIK officials was very important for the security of the Serb community. Jakovljevic was appointed as municipal president for a term of six months by UNMIK Chief Joachim Ruecker after Serbs in Kosovo boycotted the November 2007 local elections organized by the Kosovo institutions. In the meantime, Serbs in Kosovo have organized their own local elections with the help of the Serbian government, despite opposition from UNMIK and Pristina. The Serb Radical Party won the largest number of seats in the local parliament in Strpce, but not enough to form a government on its own.
