SRS deputy leader Tomislav Nikolic says that his party does not want conflict but rather dialogue with the EU, particularly where Kosovo is concerned. "Of course we’re all for the EU… What’s the difference between our request that the EU has to accept Kosovo as part of Serbia, and President Tadic's statement, given right after the elections, that he would never recognize Kosovo's independence?" Nikolic said in an interview published by the online issue of German weekly Spiegel. Nikolic wants "dialogue, not conflict" with EU He added that, however, "it is clear that without this recognition we will never become an EU member." Commenting on the weekly's remark that Serbia "is causing damage to everyone, above all to itself, by its stubborn refusal to recognize the reality in Kosovo, because Kosovo will never again be part of Serbia," the Serb Radical Party (SRS) deputy leader asked: "Says who? We will use our veto to prevent Kosovo from entering almost all international organizations." "But by doing that you force Pristina to unite with Albania. That way Kosovo will automatically become a member of all these organizations," the German weekly responded. "If that happens, you can be certain that there will be a war in Europe," Nikolic replied, adding that it was to hard to believe that Romania would sit with its arms crossed in such an event, if after the Kosovo Albanians, the Hungarians in Romania demanded unification with Hungary. “It’s not us, but Europe that needs to face up to reality finally. Many countries in Europe and the world refuse to recognize the Kosovo precedent precisely for that reason,” added the SRS leader. He also expressed his anger that Europe had gone about tackling the Kosovo question without asking for Belgrade’s opinion. “They can’t keep on taking decisions about us without consulting us. Why did no-one propose to us a solution based on the Cyprus model? Cyprus is recognized as a country, even though its northern part is effectively independent,” Nikolic pointed out. Asked about the formation of a new government in Serbia, the SRS leader replied that the potential coalition of the SRS, the Socialists and the Democratic Party of Serbia would provide a stable government, but that, as he put it, he was “perturbed by President [Boris] Tadic’s aggressive behavior.” “I’m very concerned by Tadic aggressive statements... I’m worried that he’s preparing our citizens for demonstrations if we come to power. Is that the kind of stability the West is after?“ he asked. Tomislav Nikolic (FoNet, archive)
