U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Rosemary Di Carlo says her country hopes Serbia will choose a European path. This, Di Carlo explained in an interview for Sarajevo's Dnevni Avaz daily, would be beneficial for the region. U.S.: Serbia should choose Europe She added that "Serbia has in the past years been a strong partner for the United States", and that now a new government in Belgrade is awaited. Di Carlo said that, regardless of who manages to put together a new ruling coalition, Washington will appraise them "according to their deeds". "When it comes to Serbia and Kosovo, we believe that the Ahtisaari plan is the only good solution, and we are happy that Kosovo is implementing this plan," she continued. She also told the newspaper that the Western Balkans, Bosnia-Herzegovina included, "has made significant progress lately". Di Carlo expressed her belief that Bosnia will sign the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) with the EU soon, adding that her country supports Bosnia's Euro-Atlantic integration as a sovereign and whole state. "Our position is very clear – we support the wholeness and territorial integrity of an independent Bosnia-Herzegovina. Dayton [peace agreement] is very clear. Bosnian borders are untouchable, relationships between the entities are defined, and anyone who wishes to make changes to this accord, will have to do so with consent from all sides in Bosnia," the U.S. deputy assistant secretary of state was quoted as saying. She also expressed hope that the war crime indictees will be arrested, but added that cooperation from the regional countries is necessary for this. "We are especially focused on two fugitives: Karadzic and Mladic. The United States have clearly said that there will be always a court ready to try them once they have been arrested. We hope they will be behind bars soon," Di Carlo said, and added this was important "not only for the EU and NATO, but also for the reconciliation".
