Democrats, Socialists close to Niš deal

The Democratic Party (DS) and the Socialists Party of Serbia (SPS) in Nis have agreed in principle to cooperate on the local level. Although the Socialists said earlier that they will negotiate with any party that accepts their candidate for mayor, this issue has not been discussed today, reports suggest. This is the first time that the DS and SPS officials in Nis have met to negotiate since 1996, but reports said the meeting was "friendly, with deal practically certain". The May 11 local elections saw the Serb Radical Party (SRS) and the DS win 18 mandates each in the 61-seat assembly.
