Outgoing Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic said Thursday that Russia strongly supports Serbia's accelerated integration in the EU. Moscow backs the same path the Serbian government has been advocating so far, with dignity and based on full respect of national interests, Jeremic, DS, said in a statement for Tanjug. FM: Russia strongly supports Serbia's EU integration "Serbia has never been and will never be on its knees. Serbia proudly signed the Stabilization and Association Agreement paving the way for integration in the EU if the voters so decide on May 11," Jeremic said. A similar statement was released by his Democratic Party, after its leader and Serbian president Boris Tadic met with Chairman of the Russian Duma Foreign Affairs Committee Konstantin Kosachov this morning. But the Russian official has in the meantime, speaking in a DSS-NS rally, denied that he said his country supported the signing of the SAA. Also earlier today, Kosachov met with his Serbian counterpart, the parliament's foreign policy committee head, Dragoljub Micunovic, DS. "Russia has nothing against Serbia's closer ties with the European Union," the senior Russian MP was quoted in a release issued by the parliament's press service. "Russia is also neutral as regards the current election process in Serbia," the same statement said. Kosachov and Micunovic expressed their support to the Serbian government's intention to discuss Friday the ratification of the strategic energy agreement between Serbia and Russia, and expressed hope that the future parliament will debate this document soon after the May 11 elections. They also noted that a solution to the Kosovo status should be sought within the framework of international law, through political dialogue between involved parties, the statement said.
