Deputy Culture Minister Dragan Janjic says that politicians heralding clashes with the media do not help the growth of democracy. Janjic was commenting on remarks by Serb Radical Party (SRS) official Gordana Pop Lazic, who said that the SRS would fight against media and non-governmental organizations that “help the pro-European Union forces,” stating that “the media, just like the politicians, have the right to give their views, but they must be held responsible for the facts that they publish.” Clashes between politicians, media “undemocratic” “There is a difference between the rights of politicians and other citizens to show displeasure with poorly presented facts, but no politician has the right to say that they will suppress media that has an editorial policy that clashes with their own,” the deputy minister said. He said that the Public Information Law, the Serbian Constitution and various international declarations guaranteed freedom of the press in Serbia. “All options are legal, all options are equal, and that is a freedom that is guaranteed by the Constitution,” Janjic underlined. He said that he was referring to an announcement by a politician from the party that had the largest number of voters in Serbia that it would clash with, “one way or another, media that support a certain political option.”
