EU's Serbian "road map" first of its kind

The “road map” for scrapping the visa regime imposed on Serbia by the EU, presented today, is the first of its kind in the region. The European Commission is currently working on the preparations of these documents for the other Western Balkan states, said EC Vice-President responsible for transport Jacques Barrot, who was in Belgrade today. EU's Serbian "road map" first of its kind Barrot told the daily Blic ahead of his trip that he did not wish to comment on announcements by Serbian officials that visas would be scrapped entirely for citizens traveling to Schengen Agreement signatory states by the end of the year. The EC vice-president said that “that will depend on Serbia’s ability to satisfy the norms set out in the ‘road map’ put together by the EC,” and that “there are no time frames for meeting the conditions envisaged by that document.” “Serbia’s progress will be monitored throughout the dialogue on visa relaxations. Speed of movement towards scrapping visas will depend on progress towards satisfying the conditions,” he explained. Barrot said that “depending on the progress Serbia makes, the EC will regularly report to the Council of Europe on the application of the ‘road map’, and this process will allow the EC to submit a proposal to scrap visas for Serbian citizens to the Council at a suitable juncture.” The EC vice-president said that the Council of Europe would be the one to “decide about scrapping visa for Serbian citizens.”
