A tabloid's decision today to print what it says are nude photos of Biljana Srbljanovic, has prompted the LDP to call for the state to react. The Liberal-Democrats (LDP), on whose ticket the well-known playwright is running the race for the next mayor of Belgrade, said today that the prosecution must react "with the same speed" as in the case of offensive Tadic posters yesterday. Uproar over alleged LDP mayor hopeful nude photos The tabloid in question, Kurir, printed the photos it said came from the film "Land of Truth, Love and Freedom", and thus put Srbljanovic in an improper context, Beta news agency said. The LDP said that they now seek protection from other institutions, since the Electoral Commission (RIK) and the parliament ignored a legal obligation to form a supervisory board that would monitor the media during the campaign. "We expect a swift reaction from the Ministry of Culture and Media, which is led by the Democratic Party, as well as from the media associations, NUNS first and foremost, whose chairwoman only two weeks ago stood up for the rights of this kind of media," a statement from the party said about Kurir. Qualifying the publication of the photos as an assault on Srbljanovic, the statement said that "anti-European forces and tycoons are not shying from committing criminal acts and using forgeries placed via the mafia media". The LDP also said that "a reaction from institutions with jurisdiction and criminal persecution of all those who are behind this campaign is necessary in order to consider these elections fair and democratic." Also in Belgrade today, the Independent Association of Journalists of Serbia, NUNS, condemned what it says is "an election campaign becoming ever dirtier, in which some media are directly involved". A statement from the association says that the daily Kurir has broken professional and ethnical norms with its front page Saturday. "The goal of such articles is to demean and slander members of the pro-European parties with a campaign that divides citizens into patriots and traitors," the NUNS statement said.
