President and Democratic Party (DS) leader Boris Tadic says that only policies directed at young people can guarantee Serbia’s future. “No policy whose focus is predominantly on one’s ancestors, and not on youth, can serve any purpose. I respect my ancestors, I carry them inside me, but only policies dedicated to young people are policies dedicated to life,” Tadic told a rally in Sabac last night. Tadic: Only youth can guarantee Serbia's future “I’m not in the slightest bit interested what those who oppose us have to say, what curse, smear or venom they have to throw in my face, I’m only interested in looking every child in the eye, and that’s where I see the answer to the question of whether or not we’re doing the right thing,” said the head of the “For a European Serbia” list. “Proof to me that we’re doing a great thing, and not just my belief, is the fact that wherever we go, parents turn up with their children on their shoulders. They bring them in the belief that they’re taking part in a common project to pave a secure path for their lives. What we’re doing is ensuring a secure future for our nation’s youngest,” he stressed. Tadic said that Serbia would sign the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) with the EU for its future and its youth. “May 11 is the day when we’ll finally be able to complete what we started on October 5, 2000. Then we can make Serbia’s path to Europe secure, and create the conditions to better defend Kosovo,“ explained the president. In response to the accusations and threats that his political opponents had been sending him, he said that those in the international community who meant Serbia harm had their greatest allies amongst those Serbs that opposed European integration. Tadic added that those who most vehemently opposed signing the SAA today, were the very same people that assisted in formulating Article 135 of that document guaranteeing that the EU would respect UN Security Council Resolution 1244. “Whenever Serbia has been at war with the outside world, it’s been far more at war with itself. Whenever we’ve been under attack, we’ve always been much more at our throats… Don’t take this country to war, don’t bring war to our homes, don’t cause misery, calm down and don’t threaten anyone,” the DS leader told his opponents. Those who opposed EU integration, as he put it, rather than celebrating Serbia’s contribution to European democracy, were spreading lies about Europe, and were sending messages of fear about the world. “They want to raise walls between ourselves and the world, to distance us from those with whom we share this continent, but no-one can distance us from Europe and the world, because Europe and the world are inside us,” Tadic proclaimed.
