Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe Coordinator Erhard Busek says that all the Balkans countries should be accorded EU candidate status. “Some will need three years, some 20, but it would put pressure on their politicians to work, instead of coming up with stupid ideas,” Busek told Vienna daily Standard. "Candidate status for all Balkan states" The analyst said that this would be the real incentive for supporting EU and NATO membership, something that had to be clearly stated in neutral Austria, adding that Austria had implemented the urgently needed reforms under the “pretence” of EU membership. Speaking of his work with the Pact over the last six years, with his mandate expiring in June, he said that the situation surrounding democracy in the region was very good. “The Stability Pact is the EU’s first experience of all-encompassing stabilizing elements. After four years of failure during the wars in the Balkans, the EU has learned something, even though the fields of education, science and health have remained on the sidelines. In the field of education, we’ve been able to do something since May 2006, thanks to the European Parliament.
