The UN has "practically ordered UNMIK chief Joachim Ruecker to remain in office", Tanjug news agency says. The news follows the German diplomat's dispute with UNMIK Kosovska Mitrovica Administrator Gerard Galluci, the agency has learned at the UN HQs in New York. Ruecker "forced" to remain in Pristina The unnamed diplomatic sources said the UN has "made it clear to Ruecker that he cannot count on being appointed new under-secretary for administration in New York, if he resigns his UNMIK office". Ruecker and his deputy Larry Rossin threatened to resign after a sharp dispute with Gallucci, who also threatened to leave, but changed his mind after an intervention of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Galluci was strongly critical of an UNMIK and KFOR raid on March 17 to arrest Serb judicial workers protesting at the Kosovska Mitrovica courthouse. The move sparked unrest that killed one UNMIK policeman, seriously injured one Serb, and wounded more than 150 others on both sides. Although the U.S. diplomat's future in Kosovo is still uncertain, the UN warned Ruecker to abandon his plan for leaving Kosovo. The New York post had been "promised" to Ruecker when he accepted the position of UNMIK chief, "which nobody wanted at the time, including the present EU representative to Kosovo Peter Feith", the agency quoted its East River sources.
