The Liberal Democrats (LDP) and the League of Vojvodina Social Democrats (LSV) are trading ideological blows. From a Belgrade convention yesterday, the LDP, led by Cedomir Jovanovic, accused Nenad Canak's LSV of staging attacks "in the same way as mafia media, Kostunica's analysts and journalists, Milosevic and JUL did". Jovanovic, Canak parties in campaign row JUL is the long-defunct party led by Milosevic's widow, Mirjana Markovic, who is now in exile. The LDP reacted to LSV official Aleksandar Marton's statement that branded Jovanovic and one of his associates, Nikola Samardzic, as right-wingers. A statement from Jovanovic's party says this is "untrue and invented". "At the moment when instructed hooligans burn and demolish our premises and private apartments, the people's coalition and some structures in the Serbian Orthodox Church are accusing us of treason and threatening liquidation, the LSV joins these attacks," the statement said. The LDP was in coalition with the LSV when they crossed the threshold in January 2007 and entered the parliament. Then, Jovanovic's party said, there was agreement "about jobs that need to be done". "We still want to do those jobs. That is why we await Nenad Canak and Boris Tadic on May 12, regardless of the fact they are on the same list with those who have contributed to the state our society is in today," the statement said. Canak has entered the coalition made up of Tadic's Democrats (DS), Mladjan Dinkic's G17 Plus, and Vuk Draskovic's Serbian Renewal Movement (SPO) for the May 11 parliamentary vote. Earlier in the week, Marton accused Jovanovic of having been in the "extreme right wing of the political spectrum in Serbia in the 1990s", as well as of being a "declared right-winger". As for Nikola Samardzic, Marton said he "wrote for the very right-wing Pogledi newspaper", and that he advocated a common state for all Serbs. "Nikola Samardzic also wrote about Europe which, instead of opening its doors to peoples close to it, 'meaning, us Serbs', opens it to numerous Asian hordes", Marton said, and then "compared Nikola Samardzic to Minister for Kosovo Slobodan Samardzic", reports say.
