Serb Radical Party (SRS) Secretary-General Aleksandar Vucic today voiced optimism over the May 11 ballot. Vucic told a news conference in Belgrade that his party expects to win the parliamentary elections and form a new government shortly, by May 20. Radicals expect to form cabinet by May 20 He said the Radicals will look to first solve the problems related to rising crime and corruption, murders in the streets, state-level corruption, and added they will seek to solve the problems of ordinary citizens, "from kindergartens, via factories, to retirement homes". "We will lead a winning, strong, forceful campaign, a campaign of change, a campaign against crime and corruption, a campaign of preservation of the country's sovereignty," Vucic said. The high ranking SRS official said he expects victories on all levels: parliamentary, where the Radicals "will have the majority and form the government by May 20", and local, where they will "take some 70 percent of municipalities". Vucic also said he expects to be the next mayor of Belgtrade. The SRS has come out of the last two parliamentary ballots as the strongest individual party in Serbia, but did not have absolute majority, and was unable to forge coalitions and rise to power. Today, Vucic confirmed that a municipal-level coalition with the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) is possible, "in places like Tutin, Sjenica and Novi Pazar". "The false state strategy for preserving the country's sovereignty and solving citizens' problems is crumbling," Vucic also said. The fact that Croatia has announced it will recognize Kosovo's unilateral secession in his words proves that the Serbian regime is acting irresponsibly. "Croatia has demonstrated that it not a friend of Serbs, or Serbia," he stressed, and added that it was precisely with the Serbian vote at the UN that Croatia was made a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. Vucic also described U.S. President George Bush's decision to approve arms shipments to Kosovo Albanians as a "gunpowder keg", which "does not demonstrate friendship toward Serbia". "On the other hand, it shows the catastrophe of the Serbian political elite and the ideas they used to manipulate the public," he said of the so-called pro-EU bloc.
