Slobodan Samardzic says claims that Serbia can defend Kosovo by becoming an EU member are “postmodern fairytales.” “That is fiction. Firstly, the idea that Serbia can join the EU any time soon. If there was no Kosovo and no Hague, we could still not become EU members for another ten years. With these conditions, probably even later than that,” the Kosovo minister told daily Vecernje Novosti. Defense of Kosovo from within EU “fairytale” He said that if someone wants to "extinguish a flammable situation" by promoting a hypothetical situation that could happen in a decade’s time, they are "telling bedtime stories". “That claim is completely unbelievable and it is just political demagogy,” Samardzic said. Commenting on the claims that the Democratic Party of Serbia, DSS, which he is the deputy-president of, is "pushing the country into self-isolation with which is will lose Kosovo", he said that self-isolation is nonsense as an idea as much as it is bad propaganda. “That does not exist, especially not in Serbia. No one is threatening Serbia with isolation, only some Serbs are threatening Serbia with isolation. These are not the 1990s, this is not Milosevic’s regime, but a democracy that is open to the entire world,” Samardzic said.
