The U.S. has repeated its vehement opposition to a partition of Kosovo, says State Department spokesman Tom Casey. He stated that, at this moment in time, the most important thing was to guarantee the participation of the Serbs and other minority communities in the political process, thus respecting the provisions of the Ahtisaari plan. "U.S. strongly opposes Kosovo partition" “We are totally against a partition,” said Casey, repeating that the U.S. position on Kosovo was “pretty clear.” The Ahtisaari plan must be carried out throughout the territory of Kosovo, including areas where Serbs form a majority, he said. At the beginning of the meeting, the New York Times, citing an anonymous source within EU and NATO, said that the international community, especially the UN and the EU, would find it difficult to succeed in mobilizing political and executive power to prevent a partition of Kosovo, should the authorities in Belgrade and the Kosovo Serbs insist on such a way out of the crisis.
