The U.S. and the European members of the Contact Group are pressuring Japan and Canada to recognize Kosovo, Tanjug reports. “The aim of the U.S. and the EU is to isolate Russia over the matter of Kosovo within the G8, and that’s why huge pressure is being exerted, particularly on Japan, who will probably have to make their decision on recognition in the next two weeks,” diplomatic sources informed Tanjug. G8 pressure to recognize Kosovo Washington and Brussels need one more non-European power to recognize Kosovo’s unilateral independence, and that is why they have decided on Japan, as the G8 presiding nation this year, and as a country without secessionist problems that is militarily and strategically dependent on the U.S., Tanjug reports. There is less pressure on Canada, given their internal problems with separatism in Quebec. The majority of Canadian analysts do not feel that Ottawa should be in any rush to recognize Kosovo, and believe that recognition should be deferred until some form of consensus is reached within the UN. The G8 summit will be held from July 7 to 9, on Japan’s second biggest island, Hokkaido. The G8 is made up of the U.S., Japan, France, the UK, Germany and Italy.
