Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica has called on the EU to state within which borders it recognizes Serbia. Kostunica told daily Vecernje Novosti that all parliamentary parties in Serbia had “publicly confirmed” the united position that Serbia should be a fully-fledged member of the European Union. Kostunica seeks EU confirmation of Serbia’s borders “After the proclamation of the fake state on February 17, and after the EU’s decision to send its illegal EULEX mission to implement the rejected Ahtisaari plan, the question is rightfully being asked— within which borders does the EU recognize Serbia?” the prime minister said. He said that the question had been raised after the findings of the European Commission recognizing the fact that Pristina had declared independence, but ignoring the Serbian government and parliament’s decision to nullify that act. “Serbia’s state institutions and citizens demand an answer to an essential question – within which borders does the EU recognize the state of Serbia? Every agreement between Serbia and the EU requires both sides to know what Serbia’s borders are,” Kostunica stressed. The prime minister said that the EU must be clear on that issue if it wished to continue its partnership with Serbia. “That is why it’s important for us to have an answer from European Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn as to whether the EU respects our country’s territorial integrity with regards to agreements it wishes to sign with Serbia,” he explained. Rehn called on the government yesterday to “confirm its commitment to Serbia’s European future.”
