All Serbs employed by Kosovo’s temporary institutions and local authorities in Gnjilane have resigned. According to Radio-Television Serbia, a group of 73 employees have refused to continue work in those bodies as they do not recognize the self-proclaimed institutions of an independent Kosovo. Gnjilane Serbs resign from local authorities The Gnjilane Serbs have also been joined by Serb employees from Vitina municipality. As of today, they are refusing any sort of cooperation with the temporary Kosovo institutions, though they are continuing to work according to UNMIK regulations. The move is the latest in a new wave of Serb resignations from Kosovo public services following the province’s unilateral declaration of independence two weeks ago. Earlier in the week, the Serb contingent within the Kosovo Police Service (KPS) cut off cooperation with their headquarters in Gnjilane, Pristina and Strpce. Meanwhile, Serb justice workers protested this morning in front of the building housing the UNMIK District and County Courts in Kosovska Mitrovica, demanding to be reinstated. Over 400 citizens carried banners with slogans such as “UNMIK yes, EULEX no“, “As long as we exist, you continue“, “With rights in court“, “In the name of justice, in the name of the people“, “Populi Vox“... The Serb protestors simulated the passing of a legally binding ruling without the right to appeal, sentencing UNMIK, KFOR, the UN, UNMIK Chief Joachim Ruecker and UNMIK Regional Representative Gerard Gallucci to life imprisonment. A Romanian flag was placed next to the Serbian flag at the building’s main gates. The protest passed off peacefully and without incident. The employees announced that the protest would continue over the next few days, until they were allowed to return to work. Around 200 Serbs worked in the courts in Kosovska Mitrovica until 1999 when UNMIK took over control in Kosovo. Serb justice employees in Leposavic and Zubin Potok have resumed work under the auspices of the Serbian Justice Ministry.
