A group of protesters this afternoon demolished a McDonald's restaurant in Belgrade. New riots come one day after trouble in the capital which saw hooligans and police clash all over the city for over six hours. Gendarmes deal with fresh trouble Today, the guests at the restaurant fled in panic as hooligans separated from a group of several hundred protesters to start destroying the furniture. MUP's Gendarmerie was quickly deployed to disperse the rioters, arresting at least one. Demonstrators, many of whom wore their football clubs' insignia, then moved toward the center of the city after police cordons prevented them from walking toward the embassies in Kneza Milosa St. The same street is also the home to Serbia's police, MUP, headquarters, where the cordons were placed. Before turning away, the demonstrators threw stones at officers. No injuries were reported today so far. Yesterday, at least 47 people were wounded in the clashes sparked by the Kosovo Albanians' unilateral declaration of independence, supported by the U.S. and EU. A separate protest, that of Belgrade's students, is set to end in front of the St. Sava temple with a prayer at 17:00 CET. Incidents were also reported during their march, when stones were thrown towards another McDonald's and the Turkish embassy. Meanwhile, after having their embassy ransacked last night, Slovenia's representatives in Belgrade are facing further trouble. Mercator shopping center in New Belgrade was closed and evacuated today after a bomb tip-off, B92 has unofficially learned. Last week, a device exploded in front of the mall without causing any injuries. Another of Mercator's Serbia centers, that in Cacak, is blocked by a dozen protesting truck drivers and their vehicles. Police are at the scene, and no trouble was reported so far. Around a thousand people took it to the streets of the southern Serbian city to show their protest against Kosovo Albanians' unilateral declaration of independence. The protesters, mostly young high school boys, but also some hooligans in football jerseys, were headed toward the Nis Mecator center when they ran into a Gendarmerie cordon. The shopping mall is yet to be officially open. Slovenian businesses and embassy were targeted yesterday and today over that country's role in the latest Kosovo developments. The demonstrators then proceeded to throw stones, metal objects, dumpsters, wood logs and lit flares at the officers. One Gendarme was injured, and two hooligans arrested as a result of this. The MUP forces then pushed the rioters back toward the city center. Before this showdown, the demonstrators attacked the Liberal-Democrats (LDP) offices in town, breaking down the door and smashing the windows. They were also warning television crews not to film the incidents. The protest started peacefully in the afternoon, organized by an association of the participants in the 1999 war. But football fans soon started joining the protest. They burned an American flag and put up a banner reading, "Kosovo heroes move all". A McDonald's and the Nis mosque were under MUP protection the whole time. Police, Gendarmes from the elite unit's Nis detachment, normally deployed in harsh conditions along the volatile administrative line with Kosovo, were also insulted with shouts, "Go to Kosovo, dogs".
