Holland blocked Serbia's signing of the Stabilization and Association Agreement because of inadequate Hague cooperation. “What we have offered is not a temporary SAA, but political dialogue which opens up the possibility of joining Europe in the future,” Dutch Foreign Minister Maxim Verhagen told daily Franfurtske Vesti. “Holland blocked SAA because of Hague” He added that the European Union’s Council of Ministers had decided that the SAA could not be signed until cooperation with the Hague Tribunal was complete. “I think that the EU has given a clear answer that we not only wish to offer a European future to Serbia, but also plan to integrate Serbia into the European structures and the EU,” Verhagen explained. He said that this was only possible if Serbia accepted European criteria and values, adding that with the cooperation document, the EU was offering political dialogue, and dialogue for abolishing the visa regime with Serbia. Asked whether the result of the presidential elections could have an effect on relations between the EU and Serbia, Verhagen said that it was up to the Serbian people to decide who to vote for on Sunday. “What we did is open the possibility of signing the agreement after the elections. It is up to the people to select a pro-European future and to decide whether it is for or against Europe,” Verhagen said.
