The Serb Radical Party (SRS) presidential hopeful has written to the Russian president today. Tomislav Nikolic, who came out on top in Sunday's first round of Serbia's presidential vote and is also the SRS deputy president, as leader Vojislav Seselj is incarcerated at the Hague Tribunal, sent a letter to Vladimir Putin. Nikolic to Putin: Please sign so-called gas deal Nikolic called on the Russian leader to "help Serbia sign the so-called gas agreement." He was referring to an energy sector deal likely to be signed in Moscow on Jan. 25. The government today adopted the text of the agreement. "Please, Mr. President, especially after the clear and unequivocal statement by Sergei Lavrov, help our Serbia sign the so-called gas agreement with the current leaders of the regime of Vojislav Kostunica and Boris Tadic, and I will understand it as a victory of the policy that I pursued and will continue to pursue when I become president of Serbia," Nikolic wrote. Nikolic got himself in trouble late last year when he spoke in a televised parliament session, to tell stunned audiences he "did not mind if Serbia were to become a province of Russia." But today, he thanked Putin for the remark made by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, "respecting the independence of Serbia," to which Nikolic refers to as " our small but proud people," that Russia did not want to interfere in the internal affairs of Serbia and that it will respect any choice made by its citizens. "That is what we expected from you Mr. President, even though representatives of the regime in Serbia attempted in every way to abuse even one message of congratulations sent by you in observance of protocol," he wrote today. "Nevertheless, as the future president of Serbia, I always put the interest of Serbia before any personal or party interests, Nikolic said. Ahead of the first round of elections, Putin personally congratulated Tadic his 50th birthday. Earlier, high officials from Putin's United Russia stated their preference of Tadic to remain Serbia's president. Nikolic and Tadic continue their campaigns ahead of the Feb. 3 second round showdown.
