Russian envoy to NATO Dimitri Rogozin says that Moscow is defending international law by fighting for Serbia’s sovereignty. “We will undoubtedly block any attempt to legitimize these disasters because the structure of European security today was paid for with blood during the Second World War. We lost so many people then that we will of course protect it fiercely,“ said Rogozin. "Russia defending international law" According to the Russian envoy, the structure of European security represents an elementary code of conduct, under which “one shouldn’t attack the little guy, violate sovereignty, and tear off parts of another country’s territory just because you feel like it.“ He felt that Kosovo’s secession “would create a precedent, after which everything would fall“ and that there was a strong trend towards destroying Europe when “a foreign manipulator“ wished to carve Europe up into “national“ segments and then divide them up into cells “instead of multi-national countries like Belgium, Great Britain and Spain.“ Meanwhile, at the meeting of foreign ministers in Brdo pri Kranju in Slovenia, UK Foreign Secretary David Miliband proposed February 4 as the date for Kosovo’s declaration of independence. According to Slovenian and Croatian media who refer to an unnamed Italian diplomat, all EU member-states will recognize Kosovo independence provided unanimity is reached over the date. This would virtually mean that it would be a coordinated, rather than unilateral, declaration. According to the same sources, Germany and France are closer to the Italian position, and believe that a declaration should wait until after the Spanish general election, as Spanish Prime Minister Jose Zapatero could have difficulties recognizing independence given his problems “at home“ with Basque separatists.
