RIK did not discuss the issue of U.S. and British election monitoring at last night’s session. The Republic Election Commission (RIK) did not get around to discussing the Supreme Court’s ruling overturning the commission’s decision not to allow the American and British embassies to monitor the upcoming elections. No RIK decision on U.S., UK election monitoring The proposal for discussion of the Supreme Court verdict was submitted by G17 Plus official Miodrag Petrovic, and supported by nine other members of the commission from the Democratic Party (DS), G17 Plus and the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). Fourteen officials from the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS), the Serb Radical Party (SRS), and the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) and the Reformist Party voted against the proposal. DSS official Vladimir Galic said that his party and coalition partner New Serbia opposed the U.S. and British embassy officials being allowed to observe the elections. SRS officials stated that they did not wish to discuss the Supreme Court verdict, as they had received it just before the RIK session began and had not had a chance to read it in detail. RIK decided on January 10 not to allow embassy officials from the two countries to monitor the elections and, despite strong public opposition, upheld that decision a day later.
