NGOs trying to boost voter turnout According to research, the work of NGOs since the 2000 elections has helped to increase voter turnout in elections by five to 10 percent. “In some cases, it was the key to the victory of the democratic candidate,” Dereta said. He said that his NGO and others had begun a campaign for the first round of the presidential elections that was smaller in size, but that could expand depending on the outcome of the first round. Dereta added that the campaign would focus on not only young people, but also on women and the educated, who, according to recent data, most regularly abstain from voting. “We will support the pro-European candidates and that is out motto,” Dereta said. He said that NGOs would not mention any specific names but that support would be given to “policies that support the preservation of the European path.” “The organizations will also set up workshops and roundtable discussions with young people to find out what their priorities are, as far as elections issues are concerned,” Dereta said.
