The Kosovo parliament has selected its new government under Prime Minister Hashim Thaci. Fatmir Sejdiu was selected for another term as president. Thaci officially declared new Kosovo PM The selection yesterday of Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) leader Thaci as new prime minister in the first round of voting was far more clear cut than for his coalition partner, Democratic Union of Kosovo leader Sejdiu who required three rounds of voting before his re-election as president was finally approved. Addressing parliament, Thaci said that the dream of Kosovo independence would soon become reality. He warned that independence would not solve all the problem, but many nonetheless. The new prime minister promised grass-roots reforms in the economy and education, opening Kosovo up to foreign capital, and an energetic clamp-down on corruption. Thaci sent a special message to the Kosovo Serbs. Speaking in Serbian, he promised that , “my government will have as one of its priorities the rule of law, with special attention for minority rights. We’ll work for Kosovo to be a place where all citizens feel equal and secure.“ There are ten Serb MPs in the parliament constituted last week. Taking part in the debate ahead of voting for the new government, Slobodan Petrovic, head of a six-member parliamentary committee made up of the four Serb parties from central Kosovo that took part in the November elections, he said that the Serbs had received two places in the new government. “As responsible people, as members of the Serb community, we are here, above all, to defend the interests of the Serb community. Certainly not to the detriment of the Albanian or any other community,“ said Petrovic. Hasim Thaci (Beta)
